MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
The Department of Computer Science is among the six (6) department in the Faculty of Science. It is specialized in teaching, research, outreach, and consultancy in computing. Currently, the department offers one diploma program, three bachelor’s program, and two masters programs.The department also offers service teaching in computer related areas to other departments across the university. In research the department engages in networking, computer security, data science and artificial intelligence.
As Information and Communication Technology (ICT) continues to evolve rapidly, it creates new opportunities and challenges. The discipline is thus very dynamic as areas formally thought not possible to apply computer technology continue to provide new opportunities. These two issues create insatiable global demand for human resources to work in academia, and in Information and Communication Technology industry.
The Department of Computer Science has taken these problems as a challenge and thus is continuously revising its curriculum and also introduces new programs that will address the evolving academic and industry needs, as well as integrating academic and professional training in her programs.
History
The Department of Computer Science was established in 1990 in the faculty of science and it is among the first departments in Kenya to offer a BSc Degree in computer science. with the objective of imparting quality education in the domain of Computer Science and Applications. With rapidly evolving technology and the continuous need for innovation, the department has always produced quality professionals, holding important positions in leading Information Technology Industries in Kenya and abroad.
Currently the department has one diploma program, three Bachelors’ programs, and two Masters’ programs. It has maintained its place as an icon of excellence in the country, regionally, and globally. It is committed to delivering excellent services in computing areas. The department boasts of the state-of-the-art teaching and project laboratories, and lecture theaters.
The department of computer science is located at the new Physical Sciences Complex wing 2A. It is housed in three floors with over 25staff offices,various computer labs with 24 Hours of internet connectivity, lecture theatres.

Diploma in Computer Science
Admission Requirements
Egerton University rules and regulations Statute 36(2b) for admission into Diploma studies shall apply. In addition;
- A candidate must have passed KCSE or an equivalent examination in the following subjects at minimum grades as indicated; Candidates must have KCSE certificate with a minimum of C-, with at least the following grades:
- Physics C- or Physical Science C- Mathematics C- Kiswahili C- and English C-
OR
- Candidates must have KCE/EACE certificate with a minimum of Division Three(3) with at least the following grades;
- Physics or Physical Science Credit Five (5)
- Mathematics Credit Four (4) English Language Credit Six (6) or Kiswahili Credit (6)
OR
- A relevant certificate offered by Egerton University or equivalent. Those with weak grades in Mathematics and Physics may do a Certificate course preparing them for the Diploma.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Computer Science
Admission Requirements
Egerton University rules and regulations Statute 36(2b) for admission into undergraduate studies shall apply. In addition;
- A candidate must have passed KCSE or an equivalent examination in the following subjects at minimum grades as indicated;
- Mathematics C+
- Physics or Physical Science C+
- B- (Minus) grade in one humanities subject and one language subject.
- Candidates who have done A’ Levels (Mathematics, Physics and another Science subjects) and passed with at least ONE principle and TWO Subsidiaries passes or equivalent examination can also apply.
- Holder of a diploma with credit passes and above in Computer Science or equivalent from institutions recognised by Egerton University. Students admitted with Diploma in Computer science may transfer credits according to Egerton University regulations.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science
Admission Requirements

OR

- Candidates who have done A’ Levels (Mathematics, Physics and another Science subjects) and passed with at least ONE principle and TWO Subsidiaries passes or equivalent examination can also apply.
- Holder of a diploma with credit passes and above in Computer Science or equivalent from institutions recognized by Egerton University can also apply. Students admitted with Diploma in Computer science may transfer credits according to Egerton University regulations.
- Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering
All candidates admitted to the degree Program Bachelor of Software Engineering (SOEN) must satisfy one of the following minimum requirements;
- Direct entry for Degree in Software Engineering must have an aggregate grade of C+ in KCSE with at least grade C+ in English or Kiswahili, C+ in Mathematics and C+ in Physics/Physical Sciences
- Those holding a credit pass and above in Diploma in an IT related Program from an institution recognized by the Egerton University Senate.
- Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognized by the Egerton University Senate.
- Master of Science in Information Systems
The common University rules and regulations for the Master’s Degree Program specified in the Egerton University Statute shall be applicable. In addition, the candidate should be:
- A holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or related disciplines from a recognized university with Second Class Upper Division,
- A holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or related disciplines from a recognized university with Second Class Honors Lower Division with at least two (2) years relevant work experience or relevant professional qualifications.
- Master of Science in Computer Science
The common University rules and regulations for the Master’s Degree Program specified in the Egerton University Statute shall be applicable. In addition, the candidate should be:
- A holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related disciplines from a recognized university with Second Class Upper Division,
- A holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related disciplines from a recognized university with second Class Honors Lower Division with at least two (2) years relevant work experience or relevant professional qualifications.
