M.Sc. in Pure Mathematics
It is a well-known fact that Mathematics is the backbone of all sciences and hence its development is an important factor. In view of this the Department of Mathematics offers graduate programmes leading to a M.Sc. degree in a specialization in Pure Mathematics.
To enable the graduates:-
i) apply basic principles of mathematics in other areas of learning.
ii) carry out advanced research in their specific fields of interest.
Should be a holder of at least a Second class Honours (Upper division) first degree or its equivalent.
Must have taken mathematics as a major subject at the undergraduate level.
The common regulations for the Masters degree in all faculties as specified in statue of Egerton University statues will be applicable.
Course Structure and Duration
The programme shall extend over a period of not less than 18 months and not more than 3 Calendar years. The master‘s degree in Mathematics shall be by EITHER course work and Examination OR Course work; project and Examination. OR course work; Thesis and Examination Candidates will take courses leading to
M.Sc in Pure Mathematics (with specialization in Mathematics Analysis, Topology, Algebra,
M.Sc in Applied Mathematics (with specialization in either:
Geometry and Relativity
Computer Science and Operation Research)
M.Sc in Statistics (with specialization in either
M.Sc Programme in Mathematics
Candidates will be required to take a total of six units in their first year of study including care courses indicated for each specific area of specialization. In the 2nd year candidates will be required to either take six courses or four courses and a project.
All examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXIX.
The grading of examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with in Egerton University Statute XXIX.
To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period.
The Master of Science in Mathematics degree is classified in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXIX.
